But eggs at dinner can be just more than just scrambled eggs; they can truly be the star! Fried Eggs & Collard Greens over Polenta This stew of collard greens, bacon, onions, and broth is served with a crispy fried egg over creamy polenta. (Image credit: Kimberley Hasselbrink) 16. Don't forget some bread for mopping up the sauce. (Image credit: Karen Biton-Cohen) 18. Brown Rice Bowl with Lentils, Caramelized Onions & Fried Egg This dish starts with a rice and lentil stew, but the fun part is in the garnishes: Spicy harissa, crunchy pine nuts, and a fried egg finish this bowl and turn it into an exciting dinner. (Image credit: Faith Durand) 19. Sausage, Artichoke & Goat Cheese Egg Bake Bake a few beaten eggs with milk, frozen artichokes, sausage, and goat cheese. Leftovers work well for lunch the next day too! (Image credit: Jerry James Stone) 20. Vegetarian Breakfast Posole Cook a broth of hominy, tomatoes, and chiles, then top with fried eggs and avocado to make it more substantial. While you can certainly have this for breakfast, we like the idea of posole and eggs for dinner just as much. FLAG REPLY AinOakPark 1 year ago Thanks for the basic (and then add whatever you want) egg bake "recipe". Very helpful. I love eggs, day or night. FLAG REPLY katiemonster 1 year ago Egg Soup is one of my favorite recipes born out of "sick of ramen" necessity. Now what I love on a cold night is a scrambled egg dropped into boiling broth - you can add veggies (a broccoli slaw mix from the produce section is great for this) and make it a more interesting soup if you must, but there's something very nice about the way the egg cooks in the liquid as nice long noodley strands FLAG REPLY Join the Conversation! N. Korea female agents are regime's weapon of choice: defector AFP News AFP NewsFebruary 16, 2017 North Korean female assassins, armed with good looks and poison tools, are now the weapon of choice for a ruthless regime stalking its opponents, a high-profile defector told AFP on Thursday, after the latest apparent assassination. Hardy male agents wielding guns or knives have been ditched in favour of their female counterparts, who strike fear into the hearts of enemies, said An Chan-Il, a North Korean defector and renowned critic of Pyongyang's one-man rule. "We are always mindful of young women accosting us for possible revenge killings," An said. His comments come days after the half-brother of the North's leader Kim Jong-Un died in a spy novel-style assassination that Seoul said was carried out by Pyongyang agents. South Korean intelligence chiefs believe Kim Jong-Nam had toxins sprayed in his face as he walked through Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Two women have been arrested over the murder. An, a former North Korean commando who defected to the South in 1979, is now a leading researcher on North Korean affairs, and a harsh critic of the Stalinist state. He is one of eight defectors who were given the highest degree of protection by the South. Following Jong-Nam's death, that number has increased to 20, he said. In recent years, North Korean male agents have increasingly been sidelined into intelligence gathering or building contacts with other spies, An told AFP. "Female agents are now being trained to do the killing, using poison", he said. "They can easily hide mini poison injectors made of plastic, either in lipsticks, cosmetics or under their clothes," he said, adding that such plastic tools go undetected by airport security. - 'Good looks are essential'- Agent candidates are carefully screened for their intelligence, physical attributes and family background. "Good looks are essential but this is different from any beauty contest. A girl with a curvy body is not considered ideal to become an assassin who has to engage in physical contact with targets", he said. Before beginning their careers, the women go through many months of training, including strength work, combat skills, surveillance and weapons use, as well as language courses, he added. Malaysian police probing Kim's killing have detained a woman with an Indonesian passport and a 28-year-old woman with a Vietnamese passport, who reappeared at the same airport two days after Kim died. An said that would be "bizarre" behaviour for a Pyongyang spy, adding that "if she is a North Korean agent, she should have either disappeared or committed suicide when she was in danger of being arrested". "Her behaviour is simply unthinkable in the playbook of spies", he said. Two North Korean agents attempted to commit suicide by biting cyanide capsules hidden in cigarettes when they were arrested in Bahrain in 1987 after blowing up a South Korean airplane. The man died instantly but the other agent, Kim Hyon-Hee, survived. She was later brought to Seoul and confessed that the terror attack was aimed at hampering the 1988 Seoul summer Olympics.

Rappler photo Remember that San Juan City address in the Bank of the Philippines (BPI) bank statement of presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte? Senator and vice presidential candidate Antonio Trillanes IV included 386 P. Guevarra Street in the alleged list of properties the Davao City mayor owned – this, on top of the bank accounts that supposedly contained millions of pesos. We found that the amounts in the supposed bank accounts did not match what had been declared in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN). We checked out the San Juan property used by Duterte and daughter Sarah as home address for their joint account at BPI Julia Vargas branch in Pasig and found that it wasn't declared in Duterte’s current and past SALNS either. During his Bicol sortie, Mayor Robrigo Duterte shows a certified copy from BPI containing part of hjs bank account details. Photo by Rhaydz Barcia/Rappler A source had confirmed that Duterte had indeed bought a townhouse in San Juan when he was a congressman. He served as representative of Davao City's 1st district from 1998 to 2001. Duterte's son Sebastian nicknamed Baste, came out and claimed ownership of the townhouse. In an Inquirer report, Baste said that Duterte bought the townhouse for him in 2001, when he was just 13 years old and was about to start schooling at San Beda. The townhouse has a total floor area of 222 square meters, stands on a 107 square meter lot, and was bought from businessman Eduardo Bangayan, according to the Inquirer. It had a declared value of more than P1.5 million when purchased by Duterte. When the property was purchased, Sebastian was still a minor (he turned 18 in 2006). His assets should have also been disclosed in Duterte’s SALN. The SALN guidelines say that officials should declare the assets of his/her spouse and children below 18 years old. The guidelines, however, further specified: SALN declarations shall include the properties, liabilities, business interests, and financial connections "of the declarant, his/her spouse and unmarried children below 18 years of age living in his/her household." Though Sebastian was probably still being supported by his father from 2001 to 2005, he was living away and was not part of his father’s household then. This SALN guideline could very well be the reason why Duterte didn't declare the P. Guevarra property in his list of assets. Is he off the hook, his critics are asking. – Reynaldo Santos Jr/Rappler.com Inside Track is Rappler's intelligencer on people, events, places and everything of public interest. PRODUCTIVITY 30 Behaviors That Will Make You Unstoppable A lot of people are good at what they do. Some are even elite. A select few are completely unstoppable. By Benjamin P. Hardy Contributor, Inc.com@BenjaminPHardy 6 COMMENTS CREDIT: Getty Images A lot of people are good at what they do. Some are even elite. A select few are completely unstoppable. Those who are unstoppable are in their own world. They don't compete with anyone but themselves. You never know what they will do -- only that you will be forced to respond. Even though they don't compete with you, they make you compete with them. Are you unstoppable? By the end of this blog you will be. Let's get started: 1. Don't think -- know and act. "Don't think. You already know what you have to do, and you know how to do it. What's stopping you?"  -- Tim Grover –– ADVERTISEMENT –– Rather than analyzing and thinking, act. Attuned to your senses, and with complete trust in yourself, do what you instinctively feel you should. As Oprah Winfrey has said, "Every right decision I have ever made has come from my gut. Every wrong decision I've made was the result of me not listening to the greater voice of myself." The moment you start thinking, you've already lost. Thinking swiftly pulls you out of the zone. 2. Always be prepared so you have the freedom to act on instinct. "Just as the yin-yang symbol possesses a kernel of light in the dark, and of dark in the light, creative leaps are grounded in a technical foundation."  -- Josh Waitzkin Become a master of your craft. While everyone else is relaxing, you're practicing and perfecting. Learn the left-brained rules in and out so your right brain can have limitless freedom to break the rules and create. With enhanced consciousness, time will slow down for you. You'll see things in several more frames than others. While they're trying to react to the situation, you'll be able to manipulate and tweak the situation to your liking. 3. Don't be motivated by money or anything external. Having nice things is, well, nice. But for you, it's never been about the money, prestige, or anything else outside of you. Take these things away and nothing changes for you. You're still going to be pushing your personal limits and giving it your all. Give these things to you and they won't destroy you as they do most people. 4. Never be satisfied. "The drive to close the gap between near-perfect and perfect is the difference between great and unstoppable."  -- Tim Grover Even after you achieve a goal, you're not content. For you, it's not even about the goal. It's about the climb to see how far you can push yourself. Does this make you ungrateful? Absolutely not. You're entirely humbled and grateful for everything in your life. Which is why you will never get complacent or lazy. To quote Jim Rohn: "The way to enjoy life best is to wrap up one goal and start right on the next one. Don't linger too long at the table of success; the only way to enjoy another meal is to get hungry." 5. Always be in control. Unlike most people, who are dependent on substances or other external factors, you are in control of what you put in your body, how you spend your time, and how long you stay in the zone. Act on the basis of instinct, not impulse. Just because you could doesn't mean you do. And when you do, it's because you want to, not because you have to. 6. Be true to yourself. Although 70 percent of U.S. employees hate their jobs and only one in three Americans report being happy, relentless and unstoppable people purge everything from their life they hate. Have the self-respect and confidence to live life on your terms. When something isn't right in your life, change it. Immediately. 7. Never let off the pressure. "Pressure can bust pipes, but it also can make diamonds."  -- Robert Horry Most people can handle pressure in small doses. But when left to their own devices, they let off the pressure and relax. Not you. You never take the pressure off yourself. Instead, you continuously turn up the pressure. It's what keeps you alert and active. 8. Don't be afraid of the consequences of failure. Most people stay close to the ground, where it's safe. If they fall, it won't hurt that much. But when you choose to fly high, the fall may kill you. And you're OK with that. To you, there is no ceiling and there is no floor. It's all in your head. If something goes wrong -- if you "fail" -- you adjust and keep going. 9. Don't compete with others. Make them compete with you. Most people are competing with other people. They continuously check in to see what others in their space (their "competition") are doing. As a result, they mimic and copy what's "working." Conversely, you've left all competition behind. Competing with others makes absolutely zero sense to you. It pulls you from your authentic zone. So you zone out all the external noise and instead zone in to your internal pressure to produce. 10. Never stop learning. Ordinary people seek entertainment. Extraordinary people seek education and learning. When you want to become the best at what you do, you never stop learning. You never stop improving and honing your skills and knowledge. Your unparalleled preparation is what gives you power. No one else is willing to pay the price you've paid. 11. Success isn't enough -- it only increases the pressure. For most people, becoming "successful" is enough. However, when you're relentless, success only increases the pressure to do more. Immediately following the achievement of a goal, you're focused on your next challenge. 12. Don't get crushed by success. "Success can become a catalyst for failure."  -- Greg McKeown Most people can't handle success, authority, or privilege. It destroys them. It makes them lazy. When they get what they want, they stop doing the very things that got them there. The external noise becomes too intense. But for you, no external noise can push harder than your own internal pressure. It's not about this achievement, but the one after, and the one after that. There is no destination. Only when you're finished. 13. Completely own it when you screw up. "Implementing extreme ownership requires checking your ego and operating with a high degree of humility. Admitting mistakes, taking ownership, and developing a plan to overcome challenges are integral to any successful team." --Jocko Willink No blame. No deception or illusion. Just the cold, hard truth. When you mess up, you own it. And as the leader, you own it when your team fails. Only with extreme ownership can you have complete freedom and control. 14. Let your work speak for itself. "Well done is well said."  -- Anthony Liccione Cal Newport's recent book Deep Work distinguishes "deep" work from "shallow" work. Here's the difference: Deep work is: Rare High value Nonreplicable (i.e., not easy to copy or outsource) Shallow work is: Common Low value Replicable (i.e., anyone can do it) Talking is shallow. Anyone can do it. It's easily replicated. It's low value. Conversely, deep work is rare. It's done by people who are focused and working while everyone else is talking. Deep work is so good it can't be ignored. 15. Always work on your mental strength. "Mental resilience is arguably the most critical trait of a world-class performer, and it should be nurtured continuously. Left to my own devices, I am always looking for ways to become more and more psychologically impregnable. When uncomfortable, my instinct is not to avoid the discomfort but to become at peace with it. My instinct is always to seek out challenges as opposed to avoiding them."  -- Josh Waitzkin The better you operate under pressure, the further than anyone else you will go. Because other people crumble under pressure. The best training you will ever do is mental training. Wherever your mind goes, your body follows. Wherever your thoughts go, your life follows. 16. Confidence is your greatest asset. You've heard it before: Running a marathon is far more mental than physical. A person's ability to run a marathon -- or do anything hard -- is more a reflection of his or her level of confidence than actual ability. Your confidence determines: The size of challenges or goals you undertake Your likelihood of achieving those goals How well you bounce back from failures If you're not confident, you will never put yourself out there in the first place. When you're confident, you don't care how many times you fail, you're going to succeed. And it doesn't matter how stacked against you the odds seem. 17. Surround yourself with people who remind you of the future, not the past. If you surround yourself with people who remind you of your past, you'll have a hard time progressing. This is why we get stuck in certain roles (e.g., the fat kid or shy girl). Surrounding yourself with people whom you want to be like allows you a fresh slate. You're no longer defined by your past, only the future you are creating. According to "the Pygmalion effect," the expectations of those around you in large measure determine how well you perform. 18. Let things go, but never forget. The science is clear: Forgiveness improves not only your emotional health but also your physical health. Being unstoppable requires carrying no unnecessary mental or emotional baggage. Consequently, you'll need to immediately and completely forgive anyone who has wronged you. However, forgiveness doesn't mean you forget. And it doesn't mean you have to do further business with those who have wronged you. 19. Have clear goals. "While a fixation on results is certainly unhealthy, short-term goals can be useful developmental tools if they are balanced within a nurturing long-term philosophy."  -- Josh Waitzkin According to loads of psychology research, the most motivating goals are clearly defined and time-bound. Your goals can either be focused on your behaviors (e.g., I'm going to write 500 words per day) or on the outcomes you're seeking (e.g., I'm going to get published in The New York Times by June 1, 2016). For most people, behaviorally focused goals are the better and more motivating option. But when you crave the results so much that the work is irrelevant, your aim should be directed straight at the outcomes you want. However, results-focused goals are better when short term and grounded in your long-term vision and philosophy. When your why is strong enough, the how will take care of itself. 20. Respond immediately, rather than analyzing or stalling. "He who hesitates is lost."  -- Cato Anticipation of an event is always more extreme than the event itself -- for both positive and negative events. Just do it. Train yourself to respond immediately when you feel you should do something. Stop questioning yourself. Don't analyze it. Don't question if it came from God or from yourself. Just act. You'll figure out what to do after you've taken action. Until you take action, it will all be hypothetical. But once you act, it becomes practical. 21. Choose simplicity over complication. "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough."  -- Albert Einstein It's easy to be complicated. Most of the research and jargon in academia and business is over-complicated. Cutting to the core and hitting the truth is hard, because it's simple. As Leonardo da Vinci has said, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." Very few people will give you the truth. When you ask them a question, it gets mighty complicated. "There are so many variables" or "It depends" they say. T. S. Eliot said it best, "Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?" Wisdom is timeless and simple. Learn wisdom and choose it. 22. Never be jealous or envious of someone else's accomplishments. Being unstoppable means you genuinely want what's best for everyone -- even those you would consider your competitors. Jealousy and envy are from the ego -- which operates out of fear. The reason you are happy for other people's success is because their success has nothing to do with you. You are in control of you. And you are different from every other person. There is no one who can do exactly what you can do. You have your own superpower with your own unique ability to contribute. And that's what you're going to do. 23. Take the shot every time. "If I fail more than you, I win."  -- Seth Godin You miss every shot you don't take. And most people don't want to take the shot. Fear of failure paralyzes them. The only way you can become unstoppable is if you stop thinking about it. Just take the shot. Don't do it only when it's convenient or when you feel ready. Just go and make whatever adjustments you need after the fact. 24. Don't get caught up in the results of your success. Always remain focused on what got you those results: the work. When you start doing noteworthy stuff, there are benefits that can become distractions. It can get easy to "ride the wave" of your previous work. Keep practicing. Perfect your craft. Never forget what got you here. 25. Think and act 10X. "When 10X is your measuring stick, you immediately see how you can bypass what everyone else is doing."  -- Dan Sullivan Most people -- even those you deem to be "world class" -- are not operating at 10X. In truth, you could surpass anyone if you radically stretch your thinking and belief system. Going 10X changes everything. As Dan Sullivan has said, "10X thinking automatically takes you outside the box of your present obstacles and limitations." It pulls you out of the problems most people are dealing with and opens you to an entirely new field of possibilities. When you take your goal of earning $100,000 this year and change it to $1 million, you're forced to operate at a different level. The logical and traditional approach doesn't work with 10X. As Shane Snow, author of Smartcuts: How Hackers, Innovators, and Icons Accelerate Success, has said, "10X progress is built on bravery and creativity instead. Working smarter." The question is: Are you willing to go there? Not just entertain the thought for a second or two and then revert back to common thinking. No. Are you willing to sit with 10X thinking? Are you willing to question your own thought processes and open yourself to believing an entirely different set of possibilities? Could you convince yourself to believe in your 10X potential? Are you willing to undertake goals that seem lunatic, to you and everyone else? Are you willing to take the mental leap, trusting "the universe will conspire to make it happen"? 26. Set goals that far exceed your current capabilities. "You need to aim beyond what you are capable of. You need to develop a complete disregard for where your abilities end. If you think you're unable to work for the best company in its sphere, make that your aim. If you think you're unable to be on the cover of Time magazine, make it your business to be there. Make your vision of where you want to be a reality. Nothing is impossible."  -- Paul Arden If your goals are logical, they won't force you to create luck. Being unstoppable means your goals challenge you to be someone more than you currently are. As Jim Rohn has said, "Don't wish it was easier. Wish you were better." 27. Make time for recovery and rejuvenation. "Wherever you are, make sure you're there."  -- Dan Sullivan When you focus on results, rather than being busy, you're 100 percent on when you're working and 100 percent off when you're not. This not only allows you to be present in the moment, but it allows you the needed time to rest and recover. Your ability to work at a high level is like fitness. If you never take a break between sets, you won't be able to build strength, stamina, and endurance. However, not all rest produces recovery. Certain things are more soothing than others. Recovering from my work generally consists of writing in my journal, listening to music, spending time with my wife and kids, preparing and eating delicious food, or serving other people. These things rejuvenate me. They make my work possible, but also meaningful. 28. Start before you're ready. "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."  -- Chinese proverb Most people wait. They believe they can start after they have enough time, money, connections, and credentials. They wait until they feel "secure." Not people who are unstoppable. Unstoppable people started last year. They started five years ago before they even knew what they were doing. They started before they had any money. They started before they had all the answers. They started when no one else believed in them. The only permission they needed was the voice inside them prompting them to move forward. And they moved. 29. If you need permission, you probably shouldn't do it. A mentor of mine is a highly successful real estate investor. Throughout his career, he's had hundreds of people ask him if they should "go into real estate." He tells every one of them the same thing: that they shouldn't do it. In fact, he actually tries talking most of them out of it. And in most cases, he succeeds. Why would he do that? "Those who are going to succeed will do so regardless of what I say," he told me. I know so many people who chase whatever worked for other people. They never truly determine what they want to do, and end up jumping from one thing to the next -- trying to strike quick gold. And again and again, they stop digging just a few feet from the gold after deciding the spot is barren. No one will ever give you permission to live your dreams. 30. Don't make exceptions. Zig Ziglar used to tell a story about traveling one day and not getting to bed until 4 a.m. An hour and a half later (5:30), his alarm went off. He said, "Every fiber of my being was telling me to stay in bed." But he had made a commitment, so he got up anyway. Admittedly, he had a horrible day and wasn't productive at all. Yet, he says, that decision changed his life. As he explains: "Had I bowed to my human, physical, emotional, and mental desire to sleep in, I would have made that exception. A week later, I might have made an exception if I only got four hours of sleep. A week later, maybe I only got seven hours of sleep. The exception so many times becomes the rule. Had I slept in, I would've faced that danger. Watch those exceptions!" Hence, Zig was unstoppable. Conclusion "From this point, your strategy is to make everyone else get on your level; you're not going down to theirs. You're not competing with anyone else, ever again. They're going to have to compete with you. From now on, the end result is all that matters."  -- Tim Grover When you're unstoppable, you will make sure to get what you want. Everything you need to know is already within you. Can you build us? (Reuters/Toru Hanai) SHARE http://icfkingdomofheaven.blogspot.com/2017/02/indian-engineers-need-to-stop-being-so.html WRITTEN BY Itika Sharma Punit 48 mins ago Quartz India Artificial intelligence (AI) is being counted (pdf) among the hottest startup sectors in India this year, but the highly specialised space is struggling to grow due to the lack of a primary input: engineers. “Forget getting people of our choice, we don’t even get applications when we advertise for positions for our AI team,” said 25-year-old Tushar Chhabra, co-founder of Cron Systems, which builds internet of things (IOT)-related solutions for the defence sector. “It’s as if people are scared of the words ‘artificial intelligence.’ They start freaking out when we ask them questions about AI.” India has over 170 startups focused purely on AI, which have together raised over $36 million. The sector has received validation from marquee investors like Sequoia Capital, Kalaari Capital, and business icon Ratan Tata. But entrepreneurs are struggling to expand due to a shortage of engineers with skills related to robotics, machine learning, analytics, and automation. Racetrack.ai co-founders Subrat Parida and Navneet Gupta say that around 40% of their working time is spent searching for the right talent. Bengaluru-based Racetrack.ai has built an AI-driven communication bot called Marvin. “People are the core strength of a startup. So hiring for a startup is very challenging. We are not looking for the regular tech talent and, since AI is a relatively new field in India, you don’t get people with past experience in working on those technologies,” Parida, also the CEO, told Quartz. The shortage Only 4% of AI professionals in India have actually worked on cutting-edge technologies like deep learning and neural networks, which are the key ingredients for building advanced AI-related solutions, according to recruitment startup Belong, which often helps its clients discover and recruit AI professionals. Also, many such companies require candidates with PhD degrees in AI-related technologies, which is rare in India. While it takes a company just a month to find a good app developer, it could take up to three months to fill up a position in the AI space, said Harishankaran K, co-founder and CTO of HackerRank, which helps companies hire tech talent through coding challenges. The reasons India is among the top countries in terms of the number of engineers graduating every year. But the engineering talent here has traditionally been largely focused on IT and not research and innovation. “Fields like AI require a mindset of research and experimentation. But most aspiring engineers in India follow a pattern: finish school, go to IIT, do an MBA, and then take up a job,” said PK Viswanathan, professor of business intelligence at the Great Lakes Institute of Management in Chennai. “To work on AI, you need people who not only have a strong technology background, but also have analytical thinking, puzzle-solving skills, and they should not be scared of numbers,” he added. Ironically, the subject has been a part of the curriculum at some engineering schools for almost a decade. However, what is taught there is mostly irrelevant to the real world. Sachin Jaiswal, who graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 2011, studied some aspects of AI back in college. But whatever he is doing at his two-year-old startup Niki.ai—it has built a bot that lets users order anything through a chat interface—is based on what he learned in his earlier jobs, he said. “A lot of people are disillusioned when they come out of college and begin their first jobs,” said Jaiswal, whose startup is backed by Ratan Tata. In fact, even now, when he interacts with graduates from elite institutes to hire them, he sees a glaring gap between what these youngsters have learned and what is needed on the work floor. Given the shortage of AI-related talent in India, several startups aspire to tap Silicon Valley. But that’s not a feasible solution for young teams. A few months back, Chhabra of Cron Systems was in talks with a US-based engineer, an IIT-Delhi alumnus working on AI for seven years. “The guy asked for Rs2.5 crore per annum as salary. As a startup you cannot afford that price,” said Chhabra. Finding solutions Cron Systems has found a jugaad to solve their problem, Chhabra said. Late last year, the company hired a bunch of engineers with basic skills needed to create AI-related solutions and trained them. “We broke down AI into smaller pieces and hired six tech professionals who understood those basic skills well. Then we conducted a three-month training for these people and brought them onboard with what we do,” Chhabra said. Niki.ai, too, is following this hire-and-train model. “Training takes time and investment but we have no option because we need the talent,” Jaiswal of Niki.ai told Quartz. “If we had better access to talent, things would have been better.” Gurugram-based AI startup Staqu has started partnering with academic institutions to build a steady pipeline of engineers and researchers. Hopeful Despite this struggle, entrepreneurs and investors in India feel bullish. In an ecosystem where e-commerce and food delivery hog the limelight, a recent report by venture lending firm InnoVen Capital named AI one of the “most under-hyped sectors.” But that is set to change, said London-based angel investor Sanjay Choudhary. In September 2016, Choudhary invested in Delhi-based AI startup Corseco Technologies. He regularly interacts with the company’s team and the “genuine issue of finding talent” comes up frequently, he told Quartz. “India is a late entrant into the AI space and talent crunch will be a challenge for the industry for some time to come,” he said. “But I plan to continue investing in AI in India because I feel that the space has a lot of potential and needs to be supported.” While there seems no end to the struggle, Jaiswal of Niki.ai sees a silver lining: “Talent crunch ensures that companies can’t enter the field easily. So we have a competitive edge.” MOST POPULAR U.S. President Donald Trump gestures as he leaves the podium after a news conference at the White House in Washington, U.S., February 16, 2017. 9 Startling Nutrient Deficiencies That Cause Depression It’s amazing to see how psychiatrists fail to appreciate the role of nutrition in mental health, including depression. It’s not only common sense but backed up by research that no amount of medication can make up for a crappy diet. The human body needs nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, essentially fats & antioxidants for vibrant health... Read More

9 Startling Nutrient Deficiencies That Cause Depression Doug Cook Dec 7, 2016 by Doug Cook An unhealthy diet affects not just your physical but mental health as well. As an organ that accounts for 25% of our metabolic demands, the brain needs constant nourishment that can’t be met with junk food. So along with medication, consume specific nutrient-rich foods to get better results in reducing the risk of depression. Working for mental health and addiction, I appreciate the impact of lifestyle choices (diet/nutrition, stress reduction and leisure) on mental health, including depression, seasonal effective disorder (SAD), anxiety, and even bipolar disease. What we eat and drink directly affects the structure of the brain that, in turn, influences the brain’s function. This includes both the synthesis and function of neurotransmitters as well as the presence or absence of inflammation. Most psychiatrists fail to appreciate the role of nutrition in mental health. Medication alone cannot help you make up for a crappy diet. No amount of Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro, or Viibryd will make up for an inadequate intake of iodine, B12, B3, folate or omega-3 fats, or other nutrients. Now I’m not saying medication has no role in mental health. It’s just unreasonable to think that you can have optimal psychological and emotional health without addressing your underlying biology. So whether you’re using talk therapy, medication, or both to manage mental health, you will get better results if the physical health is addressed as well. How Important Is Feeding Your Brain? Serotonin, dopamine, and norepinepherine are the three neurotransmitters that concern mental health. The building blocks for these guys are amino acids derived from protein; a nutrient that most of us easily get in adequate amounts (except for homeless, elderly, and those with addiction, for example). 00:01 00:57 Improving your diet and using targeted supplements helps improve your mood, with a possibility of reducing or eliminating medication use. Vitamins and minerals are critical in the synthesis and function of the neurotransmitters. For a steady neurotransmitter production and function, we need optimal amounts of nutrients on a daily basis. A lack of such a diet results in and aggravates mood disorders like depression.1 9 Nutrients Important For Mental Health 1. Omega-3 Fats Food sources of omega-3 fats are fatty fish, omega-3 fortified eggs, and supplements. The omega-3 fat DHA is critical for brain cell (neuron) structure. If your diet doesn’t have enough of it, other fats will take its place, such as trans fat, which spells trouble. Trans fat increases inflammation, which in turn increases the risk of depression. The other main omega-3 fat EPA helps with neuron function and also reduces inflammation, which is why research supports the role of omega-3 fats in reducing the symptoms of depression (and other mood disorders). 2. Iodine This can be thought of as the new vitamin D. Iodine is critical for a healthy thyroid, the master of metabolism (i.e., cellular fitness). Most of us don’t get enough of iodine as it has largely been removed from our food supply. The average iodine intake has reduced from about 800 mcg per day to 138–350 mcg per day. Good food sources include seaweed, cod, and iodized salt. Moderate food sources include milk, yogurt, and eggs. While the average intake can stave off an overt deficiency, it likely won’t be enough for optimal functioning of physiological processes. If you go for supplements, opt a good-quality one that provides at least an RDA of 150 mcg. ADVERTISEMENT 3. Zinc This is a tireless ally involved in over 250 separate biochemical pathways, or reactions, that support just about every function. It is critical for neurotransmitter production and function. Good food sources include oysters, crab, beef, lamb, pork, dark meat, chicken, legumes, cashews, and a good-quality multivitamin with minerals. Zinc is also needed for healthy digestion and a strong immune system, most of which is found in the digestive tract. A healthy digestive tract equals optimal mental health since 90% of serotonin and 50% of dopamine is produced in the small intestines. 4. Magnesium Like zinc, magnesium is required for over 300 separate biochemical pathways, or reactions, needed for healthy bones and teeth, reduced anxiety, lower blood pressure, and reduced risk of diabetes to name a few. Most of us only get about half of the recommended magnesium amount. Good food sources include nuts and seeds, dark green vegetables, whole grains, bran, and dark chocolate. Magnesium helps activate the enzymes needed for serotonin, dopamine, and norepinepherine production. The supplements can help people meet their minimum daily requirement on a consistent basis, thus helping reduce depression by avoiding magnesium deficiency. 5. Vitamin D Most people don’t get enough of this vitamin. The brain loves vitamin D and has loads of vitamin D receptors just waiting for their payload. The few natural food sources available include oil/fatty fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, and trout and eggs to a lesser extent. Vitamin D deficiency has not only been linked to depression but anxiety, SAD, and dementia as well. Supplementation is the only viable option to raise vitamin D levels enough to lower the risk of depression. 6. Selenium Like iodine, selenium is needed for good thyroid function. Often, just increasing selenium intake can improve early symptoms of low thyroid function. A healthy thyroid supports mental health including reducing the risk for depression. Good food sources include Brazil nuts, fish, ham, shrimp, liver, and chicken. Selenium helps convert the inactive thyroid hormone T4 to the active form T3. It also helps make the master antioxidant and detoxifying compound glutathione. Increasing glutathione levels has been shown to reduce depression, likely because glutathione reduces inflammation in the brain. 7. Iron Iron deficiency is more common in women than in men due to losses via menstruation. The most common form of anemia is iron deficiency and its symptoms are similar to depression: fatigue, irritability, apathy, brain fog, and lack of motivation and appetite. Such a broad range of symptoms can lead to a misdiagnosis and aggravate any existing legitimate depression symptoms. Good food sources are beef, pork, lamb, dark meat chicken, eggs, liver, oysters, and white beans. Eating foods rich in vitamin C along with iron-rich foods helps to increase the absorption of iron. For women, a multivitamin with minerals typically provides 8–12 mg of iron. Men should choose a multi that is iron-free. 8. B Complex This typically includes about 11 B vitamins, all of which are involved in neurotransmitter production and function. Some, like B12, are needed to help maintain brain mass, a.k.a. prevent brain shrinkage—a cause of dementia. Depression is a classic B12 deficiency symptom. Other B vitamins important for mental health include B1, B6, B3, and folate. Folate, along with B12 and B6, helps to lower the levels of homocysteine, a by-product of protein metabolism. Elevated levels of homocysteine increase the risk of depression. B vitamins are found in whole grains, nuts and seeds, dark green vegetables, and meat. For dietary folate to be effective, it needs to be converted to its active form 5-MTHR; however, about 66% of the population don’t do this effectively because they have a mutation in the gene [5-MTHF reductase] that metabolizes folate into 5-MTHF, putting them at a 180% increased risk of folate deficiency. 9. Vitamin C Vitamin C deficiency usually causes conditions like scurvy and bleeding, swollen, and achy gums all of which resolve within a week after the initiation of vitamin C supplements. But one of the more common symptoms of vitamin C deficiency is depression. Good food sources include citrus, kiwi, bell peppers, and strawberries. Nearly 20% percentage of the population can be functionally vitamin C deficient not only because of their diet but also because they have a gene mutation that doesn’t allow them to absorb and metabolize the vitamin properly. This puts them at a 150% increased risk of vitamin C deficiency. In a nutshell, food feeds the brain. Optimal mental health cannot be realized if the underlying biology of mood regulation and the structure and function of the brain isn’t addressed. Feeding your brain and enhancing an optimal sense of well-being is as close as your grocery store!
